  • Why Pilates

    Pilates is suitable exercise discipline for everyone at any stage of physical fitness; from beginners to athlets and dancers and including pregnant women, seniors and people who at various stages of physical rehabilitation. Rather than concentrating upon specific areas, Pilates treats the body as a whole, building up muscle without adding bulk, improving joint mobility and flexibility, and boosting energy levels. By using spring resistance, Pilates challenges your muscles to work in two ways releasing and contracting. You’ll stretch longer and deeper and create stable joints that are more balanced and resistant to injury. Pilates is a full body workout. Not only will you feel and look better, you’ll perform your daily activities with greater ease AND get an athletic performance edge.

  • Who was Pilates

    The Pilates Method was developed by Joseph H. Pilates over a lifetime of studying the human body and movement. He originally called his method Contrology, which became commonly known among his clients and students as Pilates. Pilates outlines his philosophies, principals and workout method in his book ‘Pilates’ Return to Life Through Contrology’ published in 1945. After his passing his wife Clara and Romana Kryzanowska continued to train clients in his original method at his studio in New York City. Into the twentieth first century Romana continued to train students in his original method.

  • Why Classical

    Joseph Pilates developed a system of exercises done on special equipment of his own design at first called “contrology.” Its focus is on a strong core so you have a strong center from which to move. Instead of working major muscle groups in isolation, Classical Pilates works the whole body making each movement a whole body effort.

  • Why Tribeca

    Tribeca pilates is classically equipped based studio dedicated to teaching classical pilates the way Joseph Pilates intended it to be. Founder Ava kim, a former professional dancer and choreographer, has studied and was completed the classical teacher training program with both students of Jeseph Pilates and Romana. A workout based on the proper alignment of the body and precise execution of the exercise. Our studio is committed to the unique development and progress of each client’s goals, with instruction tailored to the specific needs of each individual.

Ava Youngmi Kim is the founding director of Tribeca Pilates Studio located at the heart of Fort Lee, NJ. A former professional dancer and choreographer, Ava discovered the importance of spinal, core health and body alignment, posture to fully enjoy a daily life. Pilates Method that she encountered while practicing contemporary dance in Martha Graham Dance School in 2000, she found, is the best exercise method ever invented for better life. Ava has been practicing Pilates since then and went ahead to become a Pilates teacher after completing Comprehensive Authentic Pilates Program in Power Pilates in New York City in 2006. Ava has studied extensively with Bob Liekens while pursuing her comprehensive teacher training program and she continues her training with the students of Joseph Pilates and Romana Kryzanowska such as Mejo Wiggin, Kathi Ross-Nash, Anthony Rabara and Jay Grimes. With keeping the strong passion and belief on Pilates, she has been intensively studying with world reknown Mejo Wiggin recently through “The Classical Syllabus™”. Ava participated on Mejo Wiggin’s film as a result.
She has many years teaching Pilates at top Pilates studios in New York City and New Jersey including Uptown Pilates, Power Pilates, and Cando Fitness. She graduated from New York University with Master of Arts in Dance and Higher Education. She holds the certification from Martha Graham Contemporary Dance School and her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Kyung Hee University in Seoul. She also obtained the certification on 200-hour Teacher Training at YogaWorks in New York City.
Ava is dedicated to a healthy lifestyle and strong believer that Pilates will change our body and life if done correctly. She wants to share her knowledge and enthusiasm in fitness and health with the fit, injured, young and old. When not teaching or practicing Pilates, Ava spends time doing hiking, yoga and exploring all corners of New York City and Nature!


 

Jose A Ruiz.
Master Pilates Instructor

Jose A Ruiz C. Discovered the world of movement expression when he was sixteen years old and began practicing Eutony, which focuses on harmoniously balanced “tonicity in constant adaptation to the state or activity of the moment.” Over the years Jose immersed himself in different disciplines such as, martial arts, yoga, Kayak, until he discovered Contrology/Pilates.
In 2002, Jose moved from his native Spain to New York City to become an Independent student of Romana Kryzanowska. He also studied with Sari Mejia Santo and Kathleen Stanford Grant. After completing his certification, Jose stayed to work at Drago’s Gym, teaching alongside Romana, Sari and Edwina Fontaine for more than five years. Today Jose is a widely respected Instructor teaching privately in different studios and group Pilate’s classes at Equinox clubs in New York City.
